How does someone with a masters degree in economics from Kazan University for example apply their degree when they come to the United States? If someone is practicing medicine as a doctor in Russia, What would it take for them to practice medicine in the United States? If someone has earned their law degree in Russia, What would it take for them to practice law in the United States? Do American Universities recognize degrees earned in Russia? Does the woman have to take all their coursework over again in english in order to have the same degree in the United States? My interest in this is if a woman from Russia or another country comes to the United States and wants to work. Would she be able to work in her field or need to go back to American University to be able to work in the United States?

I'm interested in the feedback from this forum.

I sometime read opinion exactly american specialist that in Russia formation more fundamental, than in USA. I have finished Kazan University, faculty Calculating mathematics and cybernetics. But pulpit not economics cybernetics, pulpit Calculating mathematics. I is just programmer. I and such as I need 1 month for study of other programming language and that area of the economy, for which it is necessary to write program. Toolsmith (system programmer) need 1 day. The Physician, I think, must take an examination, on result which will understandable, can he works immediately or he needs in addition period of trial or education. Economist (and lawyer) in Russia study russian economy (or russian right). Certainly, they it is necessary additional education for study american economy (or american right). But not for a long time, since they already have a good base knowledges. Good luck in your searching!

Ira, did you study RUSSIAN mathematics in your University??? :))))

On to the question: I think that such specialists as doctors, lawers, accountants should get some kind of testing before
they can work there. Not sure how to call it.
I know that American Universities accept some parts of studying programe if they are equal (for students). My friend is going
to work in Norway as a doctor. They accepted her diploma.

Take care,
Tatyana

Ken, I think our professional licensing laws in the US should be reexamined. The proliferation of healthcare has created a need for skilled practitioners. I myself have gone to the Veterans Administration hospitals where much of the staff are doctors from Lebanon, India, South Asia, and even Russia. They're usually young, and while they hold foreign degrees and certificates they are continuing their training under senior American physicians, sort of the best of two worlds.
Foreign doctors and nurses I have found to be very down-to-earth, not big high and mighty poobahs, like some of our American physicians, who are largely millionaires who have thoughts of becoming billionaires.
Good medical care should be everyone's right. If there is a medecine which can save someone's life, no patent or other piece of legal paper should stand in the way. So now we have Brazil illegally making patented US drugs which can alleviate the suffering of SIDA/AIDS, the worst epidemic the world has ever seen. They have every moral right to do so!

Ira, I was kidding you about mathematics, it sounds absurdly for you, right? For me it sounds absurdly when you are talking about studying Russian economics and jurisprudence in such a categorical form. Meanings of demand, supply or jury are the same in the world. We also learning here experience of American depression, "Chinese economical miracle" or Sweden ideal model. As well as Americans, I am sure, are learning about period of Russian stagnation or default of 1998.
The same with jurists - they are learning more principles than exact laws actually.

Dear Tann,
I like your idea that the social sciences are in a state of constant evolution. I remember people starving to death in Shanghai, and in the Thirties there was starvation in Russia. That has gone.
I had the privilege of teaching English to Chinese ministers of state who came to study American jurisprudence at Boston University. They were the hand-picked brains of China, all Communists, but when you spoke to them you knew they had higher ideals. Their government sent them to the US to study our system of constitutional law. Eventually they will be writing a constitution for China.
Of course we have different ideas of the law. In America an accused is innocent until proved guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by a jury of his peers, equals to himself. Other countries do not respect that idea, but we seem to be approaching a consensus in the world on what constitutes justice.
The paradox of our lives is that while in some ways the world is improving greatly, in others the spirit of evil is more alive than ever before, ready and increasing able to destroy the part of the world they hate.
I am glad to see Russian women becoming interested in politics. It is the only hope the world has for self-government through respect for the rights of others. The Cold War should have taught us that a state of continual heavy armament is full of danger. We are lucky to have come through that period relatively whole. The more WMDs (weapons of mass destruction) there are in the world, the greater the chances are that some power will use them with evil intent.
As Americans we are thankful for Russians like Kruschev, Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and now Putin. Men who changed the course of history. What did they have in common? I think they all had good wives, which says a lot for Russian women.

Well, John, didn't expect we would ever discuss about politics on a dating site :)

Chinese are great these days and I think they are changed a lot since the Mao time :)
Being locked in own country is a terrible thing but no sucess in propaganda than. I've just heard on TV that they forbid Internet access for people in Cuba. I am quite curious how they explained to people the reason of this isolation? That's possible that the government feels that finally they are loosing a control.

I remember a good joke about oldie Fidel.
Fidel gets as a gift for his birthday a newborn Galapagosian turtle. He asks how long they live.
- 300 years, - he gets the answer.
- Oh! It's always the same, you only get used to an animal, when it dies!
:))

Well, politisians you mentioned, are definitely symbolical figures for Russia and we shall appresiate them for some things they did. Unfortunately they did lot's of mistakes as well. But I agree with you, stopping the Cold War outweights any losses of Anti-alcohol company in the country :)

What do you think, would the USA started the Iraq conflict if Americans chose Gore, not Bush?

Tanya!
I not categorical . Even in Russia specialist, who goes to work in the other organization, necessary certain time to get acquainted with work of THIS organizations. We did automated accounting on 10 sugar refineries. And their own particularities of the accounting were on each plant. Though all use one and same laws.
